The book’s success hasn’t been without controversy, as Young takes an unusual approach to faith that some critics have likened to heresy. He speaks to churches, charities and book clubs about the spiritual journey that led to the book, and how it became a word-of-mouth phenomenon among Christians. Young will speak at Irvine’s Mariners Church on Saturday and Sunday as part of an impromptu book tour that has taken him to 50 cities across the United States and Canada. Three years and almost 2 million copies later, Young’s independently published novel “The Shack” tops the New York Times best seller lists for paperback trade fiction books, and is ranked #7 in overall sales at. He wrote the book while commuting to his job as an office manager in Gresham, Ore., printed 15 copies at Kinko’s, and delighted in his family’s reaction. Young set out to write a story for his five children, a Christmas present detailing his views on God, faith and pain.
